Northern Italian Renaissance Zimarra and Undergown
Northern Italian Renaissance Zimarra and Undergown
This is a Northern Italian Renaissance garment that I designed and built using the Pomegranate fabric by Claridge Textiles with the Satin Back Crepe in Aqua as lining. I made the Chapeau and all of the jewelry. The only thing I did not make in this photo are my shoes. A Zimarra is an overgarment - not a coat but an overlayer that would be worn over a gown. For colder temperatures, it could be lined with fur. In England and Spain, this type of garment was called a Spanish Surcote/Surcoat or Ropa, in France, and earler version of this type of garment with short puffed sleeves, was called a Marlotte. The undergown is a simple silk-cotton garment which is in the style of what was called a Camicia. This one is adorned with pearl and rhinestone buttons down the front, and gold crochet trim at the neckline and hem.
