Colorful edges: serged linen napkins

Linen napkins are so simple yet so pretty and luxurious. These are simple to make and have a fun pop of color. This is a serger project, for those of you who have one. Hopefully you have a few colors of thread, but you could always just do a single color for all of them.

You’ll also need a serger and serger thread, preferably in several colors.

Process

014

Don’t forget to prewash your fabric. Cut out a few squares any size you’d like. I made a few large ones and a few small ones.

015

Serge down each side. To save a small amount of time and effort, I didn’t cut the thread after each side.

016

At the end of a side, I continued serging to create a tail.

018

Then I rotated the fabric to do the other side, leaving the tail attached. This formed a loop at each corner that I cut off at the end.

That’s all there is to it! The biggest trouble is changing the cones of thread on the serger every other napkin. I like to start by leaving it threaded and snipping the old thread, then tying the ends to the new thread. On my serger, if I’m lucky, when I start sewing it will feed through and just change right over. If I’m not lucky, I have to rethread it from scratch. It’s worth a try!
