Easy bowl cover

Maybe you are a Martha Stewart clone and have only the most perfect holiday meals. But at my house, nothing is ever timed right. Everyone is crowding the kitchen and half the food is ready and half is not. Bowl covers can help keep things warm, at least a little bit.
You can also make these for summer outdoor eating to keep flies out. Try our cute gingham fabrics for that!

Elastic

The process

The good thing about this project is that you can really wing it. You don’t have to cut or sew perfectly to get good results because in the end, the elastic hides any imperfections.
First, lay your bowl upside down on your fabric. Cut a circle around it with about 3″ to 3-1/2″ around it.
Depending on the width of your elastic, fold over the raw edge of your circle and stitch. You’re making a casing for the elastic.

This is the part that might look a little sloppy because the circumference of the circle changes each time you fold the edge over, so the part you are sewing is bigger than the part you are sewing it to. I just let it pucker and sewed right over those tucks because you won’t even notice them once the elastic is in.

Fold it over once more so the raw edge is encased and sew. Try to make the first line of stitching be on along the outside fold.

Attach a safety pin to one end of your elastic and run it through the casing. Adjust the gathers and sew the ends of the elastic together. I didn’t give you an exact length for the elastic. Just pull and adjust until you are happy with it, sew the ends of the elastic and push them into the casing. Then sew the opening in the casing closed.

And that’s it! Whip up a bunch for when you take food to other people’s houses or just to keep the flies away.
