How to make piping (cord)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    In recent weeks I have had several calls on how much extra fabric that is needed when making cord so I will try to answer with this weeks blog.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

One yard of any fabric you would like and approximately 17 yards of piping.

PROCEDURE:

In the past, I have demonstrated how to make piping by cutting strips of fabric and then sewing them together. During this blog will demonstrate a different procedure in making piping. First step is to cut a 36″ square piece of fabric.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Label your sides as A & B with a pencil.  Make sure to label directly across from each other the same letter.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Now take your fabric and make a triangle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Next, cut the folded edge as shown in the photo.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Now take your sides labeled A (faces together) pin them then stitch.  It should look like the photo to the left.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   It should look like this after you have stitched both A’s together. Now all I need to do is press my seam before preceding.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Now take your sides labeled B and with face fabric together, fold these to meet at the center seam. Offset these edges by 3″ as shown in the photo. Pin and stitch together. Press your seam.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Once all your pressing is finished turn you fabric right side out. As you will notice you have made a tube.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Starting at the extending point, measure and make pencil marks 2″ apart across tube at top and bottom. I used my 2″ wide measuring tape while I did mine. Once you have one side marked, turn over the tube and mark the other side.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Make sure to cut through a single layer of fabric along the line to form one continuous bias strip.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  The last step is to encase raw piping in wrong side of the strip. Using a zipper foot, stitch as close to the piping as possible.

Using this method, you will have approximately 16 and 1/2 yards of piping when you have completed!

Now, it’s time to create something new!!! Happy sewing everyone until next time!
