Let’s make some outdoor cushions!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  During this blog, I will demonstrate how to make this beautiful outdoor cushion!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

I used approximately 3 yards of Cera Pompeii, 49″ of zipper coil, one zipper slide and approximately 10 yards of outdoor pipping.

PROCEDURE:

Since the wicker settee already had an existing piece of foam, I just measured that and created my pattern by adding one half inch around the perimeter of the foam for seam allowances.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  To make sure I had the proper measurements, I turned my piece of fabric wrong side up and with the foam on top I traced around the foam and added the half inch. I will need to cut two pieces this size. ( top and bottom pieces)

There will need to be side pieces cut, my foam measures four inches so for three sides I will cut a long piece of five inches. Next cut the back side pieces for the zipper section to do this cut two (three inch) pieces the length of the back plus eight more inches so it can turn the corners and extend past the back edge of each side.

I also needed to make piping strips which I also trace off on the wrong side of the fabric as shown in the photo.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Cover your piping using the zipper foot attachment which most sewing machines come with.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Attach the piping around the perimeter of both the cushion top and bottom pieces.

I did not include a photo of making the zipper section but I will explain the process. First, take the two strips of fabric that was cut earlier three inches wide and baste these strips  face sides together . To do this set your stitch length to the largest stitch length your machine will sew, mine is set on 5.

Once you have sewn the baste stitch then press down the seam with an iron or in the case with this fabric with just your fingers will do sufficient. Change your stitch back to normal.  Next place your zipper coil which has been cut to the length of the fabric and has its slide in place face down on the seam and stitch still using your zipper foot.

Once the zipper has been successfully sewn turn your fabric face side up and remove your baste stitch.

Next take your strip of four inch fabric and the strip you just made with the zipper and sew the ends together (face sides together). These will make the sides of you cushion.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Using the zipper foot attachment start adding your side panel to the top cushion seat with face sides together. During this step make sure to use a half inch seam since that is the amount used while cutting out the fabric.

You will repeat the preceding step and add the side panel to the bottom cushion with face sides together.  Always make sure to unzip the zipper enough so you can turn the cushion right side out once everything has been sewn.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Now you know how to make this beautiful cushion!

Happy sewing until next time!!
