Tufted floor pillow
Sitting on the floor seems to run in my husband’s family. I prefer a couch, myself. But for those who lounge on the floor, how about getting comfy on a big, soft, tufted floor pillow? This pillow is HUGE, and the sewing part is really quick and easy. The tufting and covered buttons take the bulk of your time, but you’ll be surprised what a great pillow you get for little effort. |

Click the fabric photos above for direct links to the fabrics. I used 1.25 yards of each. I used eight 1.25″ covered button kits and nearly two big bags of stuffing. Two things that were new to me were loooooong upholstery needles, for tufting, and curved needles, which were really cool. I can’t imagine sewing the buttons into the tuft holes without one. I also used hand-quilting thread, which is nice and strong, for the tufting and buttons. This idea came from one of my favorite sites, sew4home.com. |
The process – tufting
Instructions for this pillow are at the link above. I wanted to do some photos of the tufting process, which was the hardest part, in my opinion. First, I marked where I wanted my tufts.
Next, I used my hand-quilting thread and threaded a very long upholstery needle, tying the ends of the thread at one end so that it’s a double thickness. I then knotted the thread a couple of times on the first side at my tuft mark. |
|
Next, insert the needle through the mark and push it all the way through. Hold the pillow so you can watch the other side for where it comes out. You may have to poke around a bit before it comes out at the dot on the other side. |
|
Grab the tip with your other hand and pull through. | |
Pull the thread tight to create a tuft and knot it several times. I think that it might help to have a partner to squish the pillow as you do this, if you want deeper tufts. |

Add covered buttons using our tutorial. For this part, I found the curved sewing needles invaluable. I had never used them before, and I am a huge fan now. They allowed me to sew the buttons into the tuft holes with ease. |
